What is a fireproofing product?

Steel loses strength (ability to carry load) as temperature increases.  There is an approximately ~50% loss at 1100 ºF (593 ºC).

Any product that, in the event of fire, actively or passively acts to reduce the rate of temperature rise of a building element.

Building elements are any part of a building that is necessary to maintain the structural integrity or prevent the spread of fire when exposed to elevated temperatures. These may include:

  • beams (girders, trusses, joists)
  • columns
  • floors
  • roofs
  • walls

intumescent paint, fireproofing

Need to maximize build schedule on a steel and wood framed project? Let SCI pre-apply intumescent coatings to your steel components prior to construction.

Intumescent fireproofing is a thin film that is typically “painted” on and applied in several phases to meet thickness requirements.

Intumescent fireproofing can expand up to 30x it’s thickness in the event of a fire.  This must be taken into account when installed in tight areas as it will not perform as it should if it does not have the space to expand.

With the capability to pump cementitious fireproofing materials up to 900’ vertically, our equipment can handle the rigors of the tallest high rises.

Cementitious “foam” is spray-applied fireproofing that is mixed with water, pumped as a slurry, and sprayed with compressed air.

Both of our manufacturers, GCP and Carboline, produce products which fall under this category of fireproofing material.

There are various categories of spray-on fireproofing to consider.  Strategic Connections will match your structure’s requirements with the set of right solutions.

Standard Durability (min. 15 pcf)

  • Gypsum based: Bond >200 psf, Compressive >10 psi
  • Used primarily in interior, concealed areas

Intermediate Durability (min. 15 pcf) New

  • Gypsum or Cement: Bond >600 psf, Compressive >30 psi
  • Interior areas exposed to view, Buildings 75-420 ft tall

Super High Rise Durability (min. 18 pcf) New

  • Gypsum or Cement: Bond >1000 psf, Compressive >50 psi
  • Interior areas, Buildings >420 ft tall

Medium Durability (min. 22 pcf)

  • Portland cement based: Bond >2000 psf, Compressive >100 psi
  • Interior exposed to abrasion/moisture (stairwells, mechanical rooms)

High Durability (min. 40 pcf)

  • Portland cement based: Bond >10000 psf, Compressive >500 psi
  • Interior or exterior steel, Industrial facilities, Parking garages, etc.
monokote-fireproofing

Mineral fiber is a dry mix formulation of fireproofing offered by a single manufacturer that is blown with air through a hose that has water added at the nozzle – i.e. K13.

A standard-durability gypsum wet mix material is more damage-resistant that dry mix mineral fiber.

As there can be many instances of poor mineral fiber adhesion -and the product cannot work if it is not there- making the right choice for your project is important.

Fire protection isn’t just a good thing to have in a steel-framed building — it’s required by the building code. MONOKOTE® is an industry-leading fireproofing material for skyscrapers and critical infrastructure. More than simply a code-compliant product, MONOKOTE® fireproofing brings with it over 50 years of proven performance in the field. It’s easy for contractors to apply and it is backed by worldwide technical and field support specialists from GCP Applied Technologies. This ensures that no matter how a building gets built, MONOKOTE® fireproofing will offer the highest grade of performance.
